Hedy says....And I love Alex --- one of my favourite guys!

Me too. To me, he is ultimate Rottweiler. #1 Show (2 countries - USA and Canada) and he just is great. Alex is now 11. He just is great.

These are some pictures of Alex I took today at training. Alex is old and grey. He would get upset if Susan left him at home as he knows it is training day. So she brings him and then we still track, still do obedience. Then he gets a bite. Then he is in heaven.

Susan and Alexhttp://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/Susan.jpg

Alex lives for the bite. We let him do whatever. He is 11. He loves protection. He thinks it is the best game in town. He also loves helpers. The helper in the picture is my husband, Roger. I told Susan today that she has to remember Alex is 11 if she cannot. We make things short, so he can get a bite and not run blinds. Alex is way cool (my opinion). http://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/Alex_Roger.JPG

I asked Susan if she could make her dog a show dog. She said "stand". This is Alex at 11 years old, picture taken today. http://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/Alex_stand.JPG

Susan had 2 balls on her. Alex lives for the sleeve as much as he does the ball. Actually not true as he gets excited if he sees a sleeve. Balls he loves, but the sleeve....well that is the ultimate so he wants the helper to put on the sleeve as he knows the helper is who starts the game.

I have never been lucky enough to own a dog past 10.

Susan has to yell at Alex as he just is a lot of dog and he should be listening easy now, given his age. Thinking of not moving. After all. Few Rottweilers make 11 and he just wants to work and he should be tired.

Alex is my most favorite Rottweiler (show and work) that I have met. My personal dogs do not count due to personal relationship.

I told Susan she needs to remember her dog is 11. This is her dog. He does not realize he is old. Alex is way cool. I think personally he is the best overall male Canada (top show plus can work) has ever seen produced in Canada. He would be most difficult to beat, schutzhund field or show ring, in Canada/USA. He was 5 years old when Susan started training with him with me and she did not want to send him to a professional for training as he is her "doll".

Her pet. He would have been difficult to beat in his prime and the dog who beat him happened to be my male who was #1 SchH 3 in Canada. The difference in scores would be due to handling mistakes as we had the dogs. The handlers is what cost them the points and we own/train/handle our dogs and we started out in schutzhund same as everyone else. At the beginning.

In schutzhund. I think there is greater learning curve for handler than dog but you need the dog.

Alex is way cool. He is one of my favorite Rottweilers who I ever ever seen show or work. He just has always brought such a huge amount to the table and excells at anything asked of him and most is all natural. I have not seen one of his equal in Canada/USA. In working or in show. We have to still use a trial sleeve with him as we still let him do whatever and Susan shouts out and leave it. At 11 years, it would be disaster to give him a puppy sleeve or intermediate sleeve. His grip is still that strong so all he gets is the trial sleeve.

Does Alex like the ball? Does he realize he is 11? http://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/Alex_ball.JPG

This is Rory (Alex daughter) learning what helpers are all about.

Helpers are how the word describes - at least training helpers are to be this if we want our dogs to be successful. The helper is one who helps the dog and who starts the game, and for the game to continue, the dog must listen to its handlers. That in a nutshell is what protection is all about.

This is Susan's puppy (Alex daughter) who is learning helpers are FUN!!!!!! not scary. I told Susan today the advantage I have over her is my dogs trust the helper as they live with him and her puppy has no experience, or relationship, so this we need to build on the field.

There must be trust. Dog, handler and helper. If anything in the situation is wrong, it is a bad situation. For everyone. Just what I think. Rory just turned 9 months old. Adult body. She is a puppy. Difficult to remember as Susan is a pretty good handler plus her puppy looks like an adult. She has a Best Puppy in Show (all breed at her first show) and is already multiple BOB and multiple Group Placing. We are now teaching the game what schutzhund is all about.

Rory is a super tracker. She impressed me today.
Jane http://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/Rory_running.JPG

Our Rottweilers can bring us the greatest joy. If we had ability. We would stop the hand of time as we all only get our one dog of a lifetime. Our Rottweilers also can bring us the deepest grief and greatest pain when we need to say goodbye.

As the helper featured in the last magazine - Dusan Majtas (Slovakia) states in his interview - the biggest mistake experienced handlers make is comparing past dogs to current dogs.

It is difficult not to compare, even though we know and understand each dog is unique. We still compare. I think it is human nature.

I guess if one does not ever experience the highs, then they also do not experience the lows.

I think this is maybe what Rory is thinking....helpers???? They are pretty cool. I like helpers. http://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/What_are_helpers.jpg

I can hardly wait until you have time to write it. I know it will be excellent and I have not even seen it.

Trond says....Absolutly a joy to watch. i loved his attitude

I was looking for a thread where you posted off to IFR you go and could not find it so I posted here. I will be having my fingers crossed and sending positive thoughts your direction come IFR. Trond's bio on himself is in Issue 1 of 2010. Trond placed 5th last year at IFR World Schutzhund Championships. He received High Obedience in Trial with 98. His girl is 3x Norweigian Champion IPO and the first Rottweiler female to get the NB CH title in the sport of schutzhund. Trond is an instructor at Norway's largest dog training school and he travels to different clubs around the world giving workshops in IPO/VPG/SchH in all three phases (tracking, obedience and protection).

I asked Trond yesterday if he had any time during the competition to post results he knows on this board.

Trond let me know a couple of days ago he has his article just about complete but he needs to spend all his time on his dog for the next 2 weeks and the magazine cutoff date was yesterday. I told him no problem. The weekend immediately following IFR, he is trialing at the Nordic All Breed Championships. I told him his pages are penciled in and the last pages I will make will be his pages and he will be his pages to me a couple of days after he has trialed at these 2 big trials.

For people trialing at IFR in 2 weeks. Few people ever reach such an achievement with their dog such as entering a trial such as World SchH Championships because first you must qualify and each country can only send a team of 4 dogs.

Good luck to everyone trialing! :) In Canada, we say "may the schutzhund Gods smile on you come trial day".

The IFR SchH CH will be the feature event of the winter magazine.

I suggest to people in my club to play the tracking line how they would a fishing line when fishing for a big fish like a salmon. If too much tension is put on the line, the fish will run and will snap the line. I see tension on a line as a problem in both protection and in tracking. As tension builds drive and the greater the tension, the more the dog will fight the tension.

When tracking, I hold the line in both hands and anchor my hands to my chest so the dog is not getting the slack from the arm movement and a dog can only get off a track with as much line as it is given.

Sometimes, and this has worked with several of my dogs, it is necessary to do 2 tracks. One track is very short, as in 10 paces, food on every step. Then the dog is prepared to settle in the 2nd track because it did the dog no good to race. The track was too short so the self-rewarding the dog experienced with racing was not beneficial to the dog because if it raced, it was over and the dog had just decided by then it wanted to track.

I have had to do these 2 tracks with 2 of my dogs because that is the only way they would settle down and not want to race the track.

Subject: Fall 2010 Magazine - by: jmitchelmore

I believe there are two organizations that are of great impact to our breed. IFR and ADRK.

Dirk Vandecasteele (vice president of IFR) will be writing a continuation article each magazine, starting with the fall magazine. He will be discussing IFR.

I emailed Edgar Hellmann this evening and gave him the link to this board. Edgar is currently Head Judge of ADRK Judges. I have asked him to write each magazine on ADRK - its past, present and future. I also mentioned another subject I would like him to write on is Rottweilers in our past, and their impact on today.

Edgar is already writing the reports for Austria KS (he was judge), May 2009 Koreung (he was one of the judges) and of ADRK KS (he was present). So I am not sure if he will be able to write a 4th article on ADRK.

Everyone is busy. All the writers who write for the magazine are very busy people but they take the time to share their knowledge on the breed and on training.

Thank you everyone.

If you have not heard from me, and we have discussed your pages, please get me the material by August 31st (Tuesday). I will be contacting you in the next 2 days to find out how things are coming along if you have not sent me material but have told me it is coming. Otherwise the material cannot go in the fall magazine as on a cutoff date, I deal with material I have received and is when I decide how to limit things so that everything can fit. Writing will be the same size.

The magazine must limit pages for articles and shows. Most people are writing continuation articles and we are bringing the reader articles written by the experts on the Rottweiler in their area of expertise.

I have just about all pages penciled in and I think this is going to be the best magazine yet.

My goal as editor is to make each magazine just a little bit better than the last.

Ok, my theory on tracking has changed a lot since I started in schutzhund. I use to train with a guy who believed in doing the same pattern every time. Same food drops in the same places. Keep everything very trial like.

Then my dogs failed.... a lot. They lacked confidence on the track when things weren't "just so". I found that this guy tried to setup his tracks for perfection .... easy to see, no cross tracks, etc. His people still go out hunting for perfectly undisturbed dirt to track on and wonder why their dogs fail because a bunny crossed their track 7 hours beforehand.

I started tracking with a women who did 100 points at our Regional Championship. She got a V-rating on her FH (I think it was 97 points). She is planning to do her FH2 next weekend at our Rottweiler Championship. Her dog is incredibly nervy about the track and lacks confidence and consistently puts out nice scores. So I had a nervy dog and decided she was the perfect person to help me.

Malachai went from getting low 80s (and a 48!) to a 95 on his ScHH2. He tracked a 90 at our Regional Championship when most dogs in our flight were failing.

Her theory is to always keep the dog guessing on the track. That anything is possible. There is no absolute in her tracking program. Sometimes there are acute angles. Sometimes a four sided box. Sometimes a step off. I told her she should write a book of all the things she puts into her track. I've seen her track her way straight up a hill through weeds, over a road, thru a ditch, etc. The only thing the dog can expect is the unexpected.

I'm training my Malinois right now for an FH and tracking my Rottwelers every day to get ready for their ScHH1-3. Ciro has really thrived on her tracking program. We do serpentines, step offs, boxes, article turns, every kind of cross track and cross terrain possible. Sometimes the reward is before the distraction, sometimes after. Sometimes its on the track (birds/ants seem to not bother the dehydrated liver), sometimes its inside a container on the track, sometimes its when they indicate an article or sometimes its a ball buried on the track. If we are crossing sidewalks, roads, or drain pipes - sometimes I serpentine through them to make it extra hard, sometimes I feed before, sometimes after, sometimes all the way through. The dog just learns to keep going forward. Sometimes we do 500 paces, sometimes 50 paces all food. She was doing 2500 pace tracks aged 3 hours and then she'd randomly do a puppy track.

For a nervy dog, this has built a TON of confidence. I had a Mali that wanted to quit on tracks and even when he nerved a little bit in Regionals, he still pulled off 90 points because he knew to expect the unexpected.

Just some ideas that come from a friend of mine who pulls consistently excellent tracking scores and the program has worked just as well for me.

That said, she's probably going on Proin as she leaked last night...on the bed...near the pillows. She was crated Tuesday night and leaked in the crate as well. Oh well, that's what washing machines and enzyme cleaners are for.

Will very slowly transition her back to high quality kibble as I simply cannot afford to feed her raw at this time. She'll stay on the cranberry/vitamin c supplement along with all the others, and I'll do a follow up UA in a few months...

We are inviting the world to our show. It will be a super fun event.

To enter Canada, from all countries (including USA), all humans must possess a valid passport and all dogs over 10 months of age must have a rabies certificate. If flying in, airlines require a passport plus the dog must have a rabies certificate and an international health certificate, dated 10 days before flight signed by a vet saying the dog is healthy and free of disease. Basically, if flying, you would have to take your dog to the vet and have a medical exam done on the dog and then the vet issues a letter, signs it, saying the dog is healthy.

The international health letter is only required if flying but airlines will advise this if booking a flight as airlines require this when flying to a different country.

For Ztp dogs, the dog must be weighed 10 days prior to our show (we will not have scales at the field) and the original letter signed by the vet verifying weight must be presented along with the original registration papers on the dog and the dog's scorebook. Original documentation on Ztp dogs must be presented at the show as photocopies will not be accepted.

We hope to see you at our show. Our club puts on quality, professional events and people who attend our events generally wish to return to our club. This will be our first show in more than 3 years as we generally just hold trials.

Frontier Life Eternal CGC 2/1/2008 - 8/4/2010

Bonnie was a lively and vibrant 79 lb 2 1/2 year old girl the beginning of July 2010, getting ready to make her show career. I had no idea that just 1 month later she would be under 60lbs and dead in my arms.........

July 3rd we started a nasty heat wave and Bonnie seemed to be bothered by it a bit more then the other dogs, on July 8th she started having slightly sloppy yellowish stool but otherwise seemed ok; on July 13 I took her to the vet as she was not very willing to eat and had mucous type stool. We went back to the vet the 15th and 16th. On July 16 she was diagnosed with Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA) most likely triggered by the tick borne parasite they also diagnosed her with (Haemobartonella Canis/mycoplasma haemocanis), heat stress and hornet sting combined. We may really never know the exact why.

Most studies and articles make no mention of Rottweilers but Dr Jean Dodds says it is not rare in the breed, but not especially common either. I have though run across quite a few owners who have lost Rotts to this horror. In Cocker Spaniels and Springers it seems to be hereditary. In most other breeds though (including Rotts) it is not thought to be hereditary

Typically there is what is called a trigger or a "perfect storm" of otherwise harmless events. Common triggers are tick borne illnesses, bee/hornet stings, vaccinations

In Bonnie's case it was "probably" more a perfect storm from what we can gather. She had her OFA's done; she went through a heat cycle; she had this tick borne blood parasite Haemobartonella canis (name recently changed to Mycoplasma Haemocanis- this is a Hemotropic mycoplasma illness UNRELATED to the reproductive mycoplasma), she got her July heartworm pill, she was heat stressed by our New England heat wave and then she grabbed a hornet and was stung in her mouth. ANY of these alone can be a trigger or be harmless but for some reason at least some of these- including the blood parasite- cascaded her into AIHA

This is a fast and horrible illness with a mortality rate in excess of 50%. Mortality is higher if the dog suffers a sudden drop in PCV/HCT values and has autoagglutination (where the dead/dying red cells clump up). Bonnie had both of those factors

Bonnie spent 5 days (July 16-20) at the vet and came home with a fairly good prognosis for recovery. on Wed July 28 her bloodwork was improving and her appetite was great.

Sat pm July 31 she started acting a bit dumpy, Sunday Aug 1 she was not too interested in food but still playing and crittering. Monday she quit eating but since she was still in good spirits and carrying HER ball around; we force fed her to keep her strength up. Tues pm she was a bit dumpier but still ok, we figured the heat and humidity return was bothering her and we had a vet appt Wednesday AM. At bedtime she was panting and hot but settled. She then got up several times to drink and when I took her out to potty she was VERY interested in chasing toads

When I got up Wednesday at 5:15 for the day she stumbled out of her crate and wobbled to the door looking wide eyed and paniced. I held her tight and her heart was racing out of control. After a few seconds she seemed calmer, went out to pee and came in and collapsed. About every 15 min she had heart racing episodes where she would be scared and stiff and after each one she was duller.

As soon as the vet opened we raced up; though not to try to save her life but to put her down and save her from anything more.

Throughout the entire ride Bonnie was limp like sleeping but not. Just as we pulled into the vet drive she had a big cardiac event due to lack of oxygen and died in my arms

The vets believed that this was a result of her AIHA (a LARGE portion of these dogs die from cardiac complications) HOWEVER because I have a sister or two that someday I might want to breed and because she has many siblings we are having a necropsy done to make sure, Positively sure there was nothing unforeseen going on

Results of the necropsy: Bonnie had NO, NONE hereditary or congenital issues. She died of the AIHA complications. She also had a stomach ulcer in spite of the pepcid and sucralfate

want to mention that this blood parasite is NOT diagnosed via any tick disease test. The vets can SEE it on the red blood cells when they look at it under a microscope Although apparently in a light infection this can prove a false negative. If infection is suspected there is a PCR test for it http://www.zoologix.com/dogcat/Datasheets/MycoplasmaHaemocanis.htm

As silly as it sounds Jane I believe that puppys need to be taught ball games and how to play them, and also to make them ball crazy from as young as possible, as I believe that they will only get stronger for the ball as they get older if done right.
John

Hi John,
I do not think it sounds silly at all. Thanks!

Can you give an idea on ball games? I do not know any other than to toss the ball and get the dog to drop it before you toss the 2nd to teach the out. This is the ball I use as it is the same fabric as the sleeve so it is easy to transfer the grip on the ball to the sleeve. The toy just changes in the dog's eyes.
http://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/jute.JPG
Juan Gato is a good friend of mine. He is also a helper at a GSD club in Texas. I have asked him to write a lot but he tells me he is not a writer. His ad on his 10x SchH 3 girl is on page 7 of the summer magazine. When we were talking about my puppy before I got him...he told me....so you get lucky and it has extreme prey...you know what to work on.....MORE PREY. Also, Ismael answered on this board a question I had and he suggested to remove the food as quickly as possible and get the dog on toy.

You do not achieve 10x SchH 3 with a Rottweiler by accident (and a female at that as my experience is they are harder to title than males by far as they are super handler sensative plus are moody). Guess that is why they are called bitches.

These are the only games I know on teaching muscle memory and puppy games and I am most interested in learning the games that people play with their puppies with demonstration pictures so I can see what to try with my puppy. I am particularly interested in games that teach the dog to use its hind end and to imprint muscle memory cells in the dog. These are pictures of Michelle Schwartzbauer when she visited my club to teach us about puppy games. These are the only games we know because no one around here seems to offer classes on puppy games, or even games with an older dog. The puppy in the pictures is my 6 year old SchH 3, BST (Ztp) female where Michelle was demonstrating with my puppy what she was trying to teach to my club. Michelle is a professional dog trainer who lives in Minnisota who specializes on puppies - teaching muscle memory and puppy games. I am interested in learning more games that teach muscle memory and speed. Michelle's SchH 3 Rottweiler had the best obedience, and had the most fun, and was most correct, out of any Rottweiler I had ever seen and I think the year she competed with him at the SchH Nationals in USA he was probably the most versatile and titled Rottweilers. I remember being at a National Sieger Show in New York with Michelle and she practiced her heeling etc. in the parking lot and in with all the people. Michelle was training her dog with no leash or corrective device. When I saw what she had with her dog, I thought that is what I want with my dog. Her dog was 100% focused on her, having a super time doing obedience, and he paid no attention to distraction and he was in heavy duty distraction area.

She stressed the importance of having THREE exact same toys. One to throw away from you, one to keep on you and one for the dog so the handler always had a toy that was EXACTLY the same. This is a toy she had everyone in the club make. I think the total cost of the toys so all the people who attended the workshop had 3 exact toys was $20 for everyone as we bought the supplies at Canadian Tire and then made the toys.

Imprinting on muscle memory for movement (peanut butter was on the spoon) and introducing heeling and targeting http://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/4.JPG

Teaching the stand for show and SchH 3 (now required in SchH 2). Peanut butter was on the spoon http://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/5.JPG

Teaching comfort and speed with handler which can be transferred to the helper. You can see the toys Michelle had our club make. All you need is rope, duct tape and scissors to make the rope frayed at the end. http://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/1-20100815.JPG

Teaching speed for recall so that the puppy keeps running when it reaches you and does not slow down anticipating a sit and teaching comfort with handler being over top of the dog. http://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/7.JPG

Teaching speed for the send out. You need the 3 toys in case you drop one and if you do, you can still keep the speed on the puppy because speed is on the toy away from you and speed is on the toy on you. http://www.totalrottweilermagazine.com/board/images/fbfiles/images/3-20100816.JPG

I think everyone who writes for the magazine is an expert in their area.

Thank you everyone who is writing. John is writing on how to teach the send out. Trond is writing on obedience and drive in protection. Nick is writing about what he does to bring a dog more confidence in protection. Marty misses drop dead date but told me he will make it this issue. These are very busy people who take the time out of their busy lives to try and help all of us with a love of the breed. There are so many writers, all different areas on the breed. Plus all the people who take the time and effort to send the magazine pictures from shows where they identify dogs by registered names from all different countries.

I think I speak on behalf of all readers. We all so very much appreciate your sharing of knowledge to help us better communicate with our dogs on their level and information we can see on the breed from the pictures submitted from photographers from all over the world.

I would like to find someone who is willing to write on muscle memory with puppies and games for dogs.

I know most of the focus these days is on protection work

Actually, the focus these days is on show.

In the summer issue, Janna Morgan wrote two pages on explaining herding and her demonstration pictures for her article were from American Rottweiler Club Nationals (herding event).

Linda Gunderson has her ad on page 33. When I made magazine for United States Rottweiler Club, I talked Linda into writing an article and it was excellent. Linda is really busy with her dogs. Her male was V1 Youth Sieger at ARC National Sieger Show and he also was 2010 AC Select. I have sent her an email each magazine I have made asking her if she has any time to write.

Linda will have a herding article for the fall magazine and will write continuation each time. I asked her to start her article at the beginning, whatever that beginning is and write with starting to help people who are interested in the sport.

Thanks Linda :)
