Hi Mike,
Jane gave a good explanation how to use the clicker with objects. It is the “basic principle” of using the clicker.
Never the less, sometimes is not easy use the clicker method without knowing some principles of this technic and what is beyond of it.
I will try to give a different approach to the problem with goal that could be more easy for you to use it. I’m not saying that it’s better.
Some times in training it’s better start all over again than trying different things very often. specially when we are not sure if we are doing things right.
My first advice, i don’t know if it is possible, is you try to find someone who could help and see what’s going on with your training.
My second advice is: Chose a method and stay with that method for some time.
If the dog have a good drive with food you should use the food. In this case using food is also good because you don’t want your dog very excited (playing) after he identifies an object.
In my opinion at this stage you shouldn’t give the command platz to the dog or force the dog to lay dow. You will create a conflict with the dog, with the exercise and with the command platz.
Forget the object.
Try to use a small box with food (Small pieces of chicken or sausage). Let the dog smell. When he starts to be excited and anxious put the box in the floor ( you should be in a lower position) with your hand over the box. If he barks, if he try to get the box with his mouth or what ever you stay calm.
The dog after a while will start to find a way to get the box. Because you and the box are in a lower position he will lay down. In this moment you give him the jackpot (open the box - let the dog eat). Do this with small pieces of food and repeat the process.
Obs. - time to time you can do this with his own meal. After repeating the exercise two times you give the remaining meal.
You do this off the track.
When he starts to identify the box you will use as an object in the track. Just the box. In training session (during the track) you go (with the leash) right after him just to make sure that he lays down when he find the box. If he does, you say platz ( you don’t miss the command because the dog is already in the platz position) and very quickly you open the box. Let the dog eat and after that play with the dog.
If by any chance the dog doesn’t lay down when he gets to the box you repeat the same thing you’ve done in the training sessions off the track.
Note: You should only use the box in the track after you are “100” sure that the dog without any help, lays down when he sees the box.
In my opinion and its just my opinion (without seeing the problem, the situation and the way you interact with the dog) you should focus in this exercise and stop tracking.
When using the box in the tracking for the first time, do just a small straight line with the box in the end. Now what you are working is this situation and not the way the dog is tracking.
Obs. - If your dog in the apport exercise, chew the apport, you will not correct the problem by just doing all the sequence of the exercise. You must be focus in that particular problem.
Try that and give us feedback. The main goal is the dog see the box and lay down by himself.
all the best
