The test today was a practice test but with a CKC obedience judge. Winter did the best in the class!!!
I was very happy with Winter today. I could feel he was with me and I also see what we need to work on where points were lost. I was amazed he held his down for the 3 minutes because his neck was stretched like a giraffe and his tail was straight in the air, switching. When I see him like this I know he is nano seconds from deciding to go after whatever has his attention. So we definitely have to do a lot of work on getting a more secure down so that is what I will be working with Winter at the Joel Monroe workshop. He was super interested in what was happening in the other rings. There are 4 rings going at the same time of different classes.
To earn a CD title, the dog must pass 3x the test with a minimum score of 170 out of 200.
So our goals for the next couple of months are:
- pass BH (Companion Dog with Traffic Sureness test)
- pass CD (Companion Dog)
- pass CGN (Canine Good Neighbour)
- pass Novice Trick Dog Level 2
start preparing to show in the next CKC conformation show in this area in May.
Winter has his Novice Trick Dog title and his BST and has earned show ratings so far in Georgia (VP1 - 6 months old; SG1 - 18 months old) and in Texas (V4 - 17 months). He is also entered for the ADRK BSE in California. The BST and the ADRK BSE are the exact same test and I am entering because it is just an extra title.
Females in heat can trial, enter BST and enter the show.
Trials and breed surveys are ALWAYS done prior to a show because at a show there are often many females in season and if one owns a high drive male, the sex drive is usually as high as the prey/ball drive and then you will have a male who will not lift his head off the ground.
If a female is in season, as a courtesy to the host club, the female's owner should let the club know the female is in season. Then the female is usually given an area to practice on that is not on the route that the males will be doing their heeling pattern.
For the trial and BST, it is always males followed by females. Any females in heat will go at the very end (both at the trial and at the BST).
Females in season stay off the trial field but when all the dogs have done their obedience, then the female is given 15 minutes to play on the field and the handler to do whatever they want to do with the dog on the field. The female is then put up for about 20 minutes. Then the female comes out and does her obedience paired with a neutored male or another female. Often the paired dog is a demo dog the club supplies.
Food and toy is allowed to bait the dog for measuring and double handling is encouraged. Dogs can only focus on one thing at one time so if a dog is focused on a toy, then the dog will not notice that he/she is being measured.

This motel is in a safe location and the motel is decent. I have stayed in it previoiusly. It is slightly off of Hwy 99, across the street is a McDonalds, gas station and small convenience store. It is located approximately 10 minute drive from Joel's field.
