A lot of people don’t show the early stages of teaching behaviours because they prefer to post videos where the dog already looks “polished.” Personally, I don’t think that helps people who don’t have access to a training group and who may want to do IGP but aren’t yet sure where to begin with their dog.
In virtually all obedience exercises, we are looking for three things:
Position
Focus
Drive
Once distractions are introduced — especially something the dog really, really wants — position and focus are usually the first things to deteriorate. This video shows how I begin teaching the dog to maintain all three and using a toy that the dog finds exciting (ball and pillow).

In my training program, I free-shape behaviour until the dog is getting close to being ready for a BH, and only then do I start cleaning things up. I believe it is very easy to take things out of a dog, regardless of pedigree, but once something is taken out, it can be very difficult — and sometimes impossible — to put it back in.
I also believe training is all about relationship and how the dog perceives a situation. I have never once seen a dog do something the dog did not want to do voluntarily.
Some trainers focus heavily on precision, formality, and corrections. That approach works for them.
I’m not a serious trainer. I simply enjoy training with my dogs, and I want both myself and my dogs to have fun together. I do work toward titles, but I am in no hurry to achieve them.
