There are a million ways to train and really there is no right way or wrong way. Each trainer/handler writes his/her very own dictionary for the dog and each dog is different and each handler is different but in general a lot of things are similar within a breed. This video shows how I am starting to introduce correction with the e-collar. Also, how I build training into my life. I need to mow the back grass as it will soon be too tall to cut, I need to play with my dog and I need to feed my dog. So this was our session this evening but my plan for the session is that I would start proofing the down and would use an ecollar for correction. All I want to see is compliance. If I see a dog is trying then I do not correct. Winter got two corrections in this session. He needs to understand what "platz" means for CDX and also for IGP1. I don't edit any videos so that people can see the mistakes that my dog makes and also the mistakes that I make and to give people who don't have access to a training group experienced with the Rottweiler, that these are exercises they could try on their own. If something you see makes sense to you then try it. If it does not, then throw it out the window. The greatest correction one can give a dog is the withholding of the reward. The more the dog values something (or wants something) the harder the dog will try and therefore the dog must be rewarded any time he tries. Too many times I see people doing "obedience" with their dog with the ecollar permanently in their hand. If the ecollar is in your hand - this means you plan on giving your dog stim. Reality is most handlers try to use it as a training device versus a correction device and press the button for every single infraction and soon there is no joy or fun in the training. Plus the timing is way off and so is the level of stim being used. If a dog shows any reaction other than compliance then the level is either too high or too low. No compliance, no reaction, dog wants to keep doing what he is doing and will ignore the correction. Too high and the dog will either yelp or freeze. The level I look for is the only reaction from the dog is compliance. I also NEVER give stim on the word. Stim is given instantly the second I tell the dog "no". The collar is a correction device. Giving the dog stim when a command is used will create conflict in the dog on that word and when the dog hears the word will give a negative reaction and often the handler does not know enough to see the reaction on the dog because the reaction one is looking for is very slightly. Stim = pressure. With female Rottweilers - give them too much pressure and they will refuse to play with you and will show their resentment in training by lagging, operating in slow motion and basically showing clearly that what the handler is doing with the dog is not the dog's idea of fun. If the handler is having fun, then generally so is the dog. If the handler finds training a chore and wants to correct, correct, correct and then correct some more. Good luck on ever achieving a schutzhund title with a female Rottweiler. Possibly one could do this and achieve a title with a male but probably they would not make it past the BH with that sort of training. If a dog cannot be controlled by the handler's voice. Then the dog cannot trial and expect to pass. Ecollars and pinch collars are illegal devices on a dog at a schutzhund trial under FCI IGP rules. But I think any collar on a dog can be turned into a bad tool if used incorrectly or where the dog does not truly understand why or what he is being corrected for.
